*All Training Sessions Take Place at Powerstation Gym in Middletown unless otherwise noted.
*Prodigy Memberships allow wrestlers to attend any age, experience, and ability appropriate training sessions during the spring
*$20 Drop-in available for any training session for any non-member

Prodigy Wrestling Academy offers opportunities for wrestlers to train in any of the 3 main styles throughout the spring.  Wrestlers can choose just one style or choose to train in multiple styles throughout the spring.  ​

What are the different styles of Wrestling?  Which one is best for my wrestler?

Freestyle Training

Greco-Roman Training

Folkstyle Training

Freestyle wrestling is a style of wrestling. It is one of two styles of wrestling contested in the Olympic Games. 
  • Most wrestling is done in the neutral position.
  • Points can be scored for exposing your opponents back briefly without holding the wrestler.
  • Wrestlers can lock hands in the top position.
  • Wrestlers on the bottom flatten out and try not to get turned or expose their back.
  • A match has 2 periods with a 30 second break between them.
  • Freestyle is very similar to folkstyle (or collegiate) wrestling and can help wrestlers better themselves in multiple ways by wrestling it such as:
    • ​Finishing quickly on takedowns
    • body awareness
    • Neutral Wrestling 
    • Hand Fighting
The Greco-Roman style of wrestling forbids holds below the waist, which is the main feature that differentiates it from freestyle wrestling (the other form of wrestling contested at the Olympics)
  • Wrestlers cannot touch their opponents legs or use their legs to trip the other wrestler.
  • ​Wrestlers can lock hands in the top position.
  • Wrestlers on the bottom flatten out and try not to get turned or expose their back.
  • A match has 2 periods with a 30 second break between them.
  • Greco-Roman can help a wrestler become better at folkstyle (or collegiate) wrestling by becoming better with:
    • Handfighting
    • Throws
    • Countering throws
    • Body awareness
Team Jones "perfecting the Basics" Training continues year round for the wrestler that is just beginning the sport or wants to keep improving on the basics.  The skills learned during a Team Jones practice are the skills that will be used in the sport of wrestling for years to come.  Perfect for younger wrestlers with 0-2 years experience.
Experienced Folkstyle Training - For those wrestlers that want to continue training in the style used for high school and college, this will be an option for wrestlers to do just that.  Don't miss a beat in your training and start working towards those goals for next season.  This is for the wrestler with at least 2 years of experience from youth through high school.  ​

Freestyle and Greco-Roman training is for any serious wrestler.  Most high level wrestlers wrestle these styles to improve their overall wrestling.  We strongly encourage most high school and junior high wrestlers to wrestle FS/GR in the spring, but even grade school wrestlers would benefit and can handle the differences.  Wrestlers should start in these styles as soon as they are old enough/mature enough to be able to differentiate and switch from one style to the next.  Many youth wrestlers have been very good freestyle/Greco Wrestlers and can handle the difference easily, so all high school and junior high wrestlers should also.

Membership Registration for any Prodigy or Team Jones Programs can be made at the Powerstation front desk.
All payments (cash, credit, or check) for Memberships and drop-ins can be made at the front desk. 
If doing a Drop-In or buying a Punch Card you do NOT need to fill out a registration form.  You just need the online waiver.

​Mandatory Waiver and Contact Information must be UPDATED EACH YEAR starting Aug. 1st and ending July 31st. ​
​Wrestlers cannot participate unless they have an updated form on file for the season.
